This route invites you to explore the silent landscapes where, in March 1937, the course of history stopped at the gates of Madrid. It begins in Torija, a town that was much more than an enclave on the national highway: the headquarters of the Republican army was established there, a nerve center from which the defense against the fascist advance was organized. Leaders such as Enrique Líster and Juan Negrín passed through its streets, and the words of President Manuel Azaña resonated within its walls. Even culture found its trench here, with the presence of Gerda Taro, Errol Flynn, and Miguel Hernández, who raised his voice with the poem "Bloody Mussolini" before the combatants.
The route continues to Trijueque, the point of maximum penetration of the Italian army sent by Mussolini, where the modern motorized army encountered unexpected resistance. It will continue to Brihuega, where you will visit the military complex known as the Casa del Guarda. A few meters away, the remains of the military camp they built are still preserved: barracks, powder magazines, a command post, and even a field altar where masses were held amidst the devastation.
Finally, we will arrive at Masegoso de Tajuña, where we will stop along the way to share a rustic lunch, inspired by the simple but hearty menus that fed the soldiers at the front. Thus, step by step, word by word, dish by dish, we will reconstruct the living memory of a battle that even today has much to tell us.
